Rare Exhibition Showcases Australia’s Only Shakespeare’s First Folio

Shakespeare First Folio at The State Library

In a once-in-a-lifetime event, Sydney-siders will have the unique opportunity to view Australia’s only copy of Shakespeare’s First Folio. This extraordinary exhibition, titled “For All Time: Shakespeare in Print,” will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the publication of the renowned literary work. The State Library will host the exhibition, opening its doors to the public on Saturday, July 8, 2023.

“For All Time: Shakespeare in Print” is part of a global commemoration marking four centuries since the compilation of Shakespeare’s plays was published in a single volume. The First Folio, as it is now known, was released in 1623, seven years after the Bard’s passing. It was curated by his fellow actors John Heminge and Henry Condell to honour his significant contributions to the theatre. While approximately 750 copies were printed, only 234 are known to exist today. The First Folio holds an esteemed position as one of the foundation documents of English literature.

Australia’s sole copy of the First Folio found its home at the State Library when it was generously donated in 1885 by Richard and George Tangye, industrial magnates from England.

Maggie Patton, a rare book expert at the State Library, highlights the individual histories and characteristics that distinguish each folio. “No two folios are alike,” she explains. “Inconsistencies resulting from the proofing process, various rebinding efforts, and personal annotations from previous owners contribute to their uniqueness and mystery. For Australians, witnessing our sole copy is a rare and special treat.”

Beyond the First Folio itself, visitors to the exhibition will encounter a diverse range of fascinating artefacts and artworks that shed light on Shakespeare’s enduring legacy. Some notable highlights include the playbill for the first known Shakespearean production in Australia, a magnificent oak casket crafted by Morris & Norton of Birmingham to transport the First Folio to Australia, and a rare book by Francis Bacon titled “Historie of the Raigne of King Henry the Seventh,” which adds to the ongoing discourse around Shakespeare’s true identity.

The exhibition will also feature a captivating visual display showcasing the weird and wonderful works inspired by the plays found in the First Folio. Visitors can marvel at unique creations such as “William Shakespeare’s Star Wars,” a tunnel book by Italian artist Daniele Catalli inspired by “Romeo & Juliet,” and an artist’s book titled “Shakespeare in the Forest” by Jennifer Gibney.

“For All Time: Shakespeare in Print” will be housed in the State Library’s Amaze Gallery from July 8, 2023, to February 25, 2024. Don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to delve into the world of Shakespeare and experience the enduring power of his works firsthand.
