Sculpture by the Sea Sydney Art Exhibition 2019

The Sculpture by the Sea Sydney Exhibition is back for 2019.

The Sculpture by the Sea Sydney event returns to Bondi this Thursday, October 24 for its 23rd annual event.

Its set to attract 500,000 visitors from across Sydney to Boni and Tamarama.

The famous 18-day event sees spectacular art work presented along the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk.

“It’s hard to know why people have responded to Sculpture by the Sea for so many years, but it’s got to be the interaction between Mother Nature, what the artists conjure up each year with their extraordinary creativity and the fact that it is a free event,” Sculpture by the Sea founding director David Hanley said at a press conference today.

Sculpture by the Sea to Move in 2020?

In the lead up to this even, there’s been some controversy between the organisers and the local Waverley Council. Indeed there has been some suggestion this could be the last event in the area.

Other local councils, on the northern beaches and to the south, are looking into bidding to host the event in 2020.

The Daily Telegraph reports a “less than 20% chance” Sculptures by the Sea will return to Bondi.

“It would take a dramatic shift of behaviour and an understanding of, and respect for, the extraordinary lengths artists go to, for us to change our mind. The (council) either doesn’t give two hoots about the artists or they don’t understand the length the artists go to, to put on a free event to the public.”

“I’ve always viewed each Sculpture by the Sea as it comes and goes like a season,” Hanley said.

“I would love to be welcomed by another council … we are going through the process now. It’s significantly advanced and two of our largest sponsors have said they would follow,” he said.

The 2019 Sculpture by the Sea Sydney event takes place 24 October to 10 November.

There are a number of great artists showcasing as every year.

David Cerny and Vaclav Fiala contribute, part of a Czech Slovak showcase. Czech sculptor David Cerny will install a full-size replica of his famous pink tank at this year’s Sculpture by the Sea.

Indigenous artist Janine McAullay Bott spent a year weaving her artwork. The Western Australian indigenous woman created a sculpture of a vintage farm truck, she was interviewed by the Huffington Post.
