Breaking: A severe weather warning for Sydney and greater New South Wales has just been issued.
Sydney weather : There is a fire weather warning for a large area of New South Wales, including Sydney.
The Weather Bureau is concerned about high winds, low humidity and 40C plus temperatures.
The weather will create a dangerous fire emergency for much of the region.
The details are outline below in an emergency update from the Sydney team:
Fire Weather Warning
for the Greater Hunter, Greater Sydney Region, Illawarra/Shoalhaven, Far South Coast, Monaro Alpine, Southern Ranges, Central Ranges, North Western, Lower Central West Plains, Southern Slopes, Eastern Riverina, Southern Riverina and Northern Riverina fire areas
Issued at 3:15 pm EDT on Friday 3 January 2020.
Weather Situation
Very hot, dry and windy conditions are bringing elevated fire danger to the Central Ranges on Friday. Elevated fire dangers will spread to much of the southern and eastern districts on Saturday.

Extreme Fire Danger is forecast for the following fire areas:
Illawarra/Shoalhaven, Far South Coast, Monaro Alpine, Southern Ranges, Southern Slopes and Eastern Riverina
Severe Fire Danger is forecast for the following fire areas:
Greater Hunter, Greater Sydney Region and Central Ranges
Very High Fire Danger is forecast for the following fire areas:
North Western, Lower Central West Plains, Southern Riverina and Northern Riverina
The NSW Rural Fire Service advises you to:
- Action your Bushfire Survival Plan now.
- Monitor the fire and weather situation through your local radio station, www.rfs.nsw.gov.au and www.bom.gov.au.
- Call 000 (Triple Zero) in an emergency.
The Rural Fire Service advises that if you are in an area of Severe Fire Danger:
- If you plan to leave finalise your options and leave early on the day
- Only stay if your home is well prepared and you can actively defend it
- Prepare for the emotional, mental and physical impact of defending your property – if in doubt, leave.
