A new hotel is opening in one of Sydney’s most prestigious suburbs, the Albert Mosman Hotel.

The eagerly anticipated 5-star luxury hotel, The Albert Mosman, developed by hotel group, Emerald City, is officially opening its doors in early 2020.

The Albert, located in Cowles Road, Mosman, has been built on heritage site, The Telopea, and adjoins the historic Boronia House. The heritage building has been transformed into a stunning 26-room, 5-star luxury boutique hotel. 

The Albert is steeped in rich history as it was initially built as a stately home in 1886, by two coach building brothers.  It’s often said that Mosman started as a ‘Federation suburb’ at this time, between 1891 – 1921, with a big rise in its population due to the desirability of the setting, offering spectacular views and secluded locations. Today it remains one of the highest rated areas of Sydney. 

It was the vision of Jean-Claude Branch, Chief Executive Officer of Emerald City Hotels and who led the development, to retain the property’s heritage but with a re-imagined renovation and create a feeling of comforting luxury for its guests. He engaged Madewell, a Sydney-based construction company, and architect Andrew Tzannes, to lovingly restore many of the original features, whilst adding a modern wing to the hotel which both compliments and highlights the beautiful Victorian features of the original house, named Telopea.

Jean-Claude Branch, says, “There is something magical about restoring a heritage site and breathing new life into it. A first for Mosman, we are incredibly excited with the support of the North Shore and wider Sydney community we have received to build this divine 5-star hotel.”

It’s because of local developers and entrepreneurs, such as Branch, who continuously invest time, passion and money into the development of Sydney, that there is a continuing rise in the trend of domestic tourism. The national number of domestic travellers has increased with a 12% rise in 2019, resulting in 119 million overnight visitors, of which 39 million visited Sydney.[1] This makes it the perfect time for the likes of The Albert to provide an offering outside of the city centre, providing its visitors with a more secluded and idyllic setting.

Bringing to its interior rich colours, luxury fabrics and paying homage to its original heritage, is Tess Regan, a local interior architect. Regan has worked with Branch’s wife, local photographer Kate Branch, to curate a series of historical images showing the lively and mysterious times of 1886. The photos can be found hanging throughout the walls of the lobby and the hotel, depicting the transition from old to new, yet still beautifully embracing the historic landscape.

The older images show a time of dapper gentleman, the Curlew artistic movement camping at Balmoral, and glamorous parties. There are also some landscapes taken at that time with a large-format camera. A stillness exists in all the images, showcasing the peacefulness of a much smaller population.

The food served at The Albert will continue the theme of combining luxury with homely favourites, such as their delicious Mediterranean breakfast, or an a la carte hot breakfast, along with an antipasto platter in the evening with drinks. The large majority of the food will be sourced from local Australian producers, including organic coffee from Bay Coffee Neutral Bay, butter from Pepe Saya and Meredith Dairy Pepperberry Goat’s cheese, with organic chocolate from local Coco Chocolate featuring in the minibars.

All the rooms have been lovingly equipped with toiletries from local Sydney supplier, Leif Products, that use Australian botanicals. They are all sulphate, paraben, soap free, 100% vegan and cruelty-free. To further support the environment, The Albert will not be using small plastic bottles in the rooms, and all the minibars will additionally feature no plastic bottles or straws.

The Albert’s Mosman location makes for the ideal base to both completely relax in an indulgent setting, whilst easily being able to explore Sydney. Guest will be able to enjoy the white sandy beaches of Balmoral, breathtaking views of the headlands over Sydney Harbour, visit Taronga Zoo, enjoy the local restaurants, and shopping, all whilst escaping the busyness that can be the CBD.
