A new adventure travel company, River Adventures, has launched to help Sydney-siders discover a hidden gem just north of town. Daniel Morrison explains.
When was the last time you went on an adventure? Experienced something new? Paddled down a river, or hiked through the bush, with no signs of humans anywhere, save for maybe an ancient aboriginal hand painting on the rock?
It’s a romantic notion many of us enjoy, but few get the chance to live, because knowing where to go, how to get there, or what to eat on the way can be hard.
A new Sydney based company, River Adventures, is changing things up by taking people on trips to do just that. And the good news is, you don’t need to drive for hours to escape the city – this is only 45 minutes from the Sydney CBD.

Unchartered Territory
The lower Hawkesbury (which forms Sydney’s northern boundary), is also one of its best kept secrets.
The untouched waterways of Berowra waters, Marramarra creek, and Cowan creek, all feed in the mighty river before it flows out through Broken Bay to the Pacific Ocean.

If you look on a map, it’s just a giant swathe of green, a natural playground practically begging you to come and explore.
Part of the magic is that it’s almost completely untouched – there are no roads or shops, and most of the settlements are water access only.

Places That Capture The Imagination
Milsons Passage, Bar Point, Coba Point, Little Wobby, and the better-known Dangar Island, have captivated the imaginations of those in the know for years, and hosted countless weekends away. Life seems to go at a different pace to the rest of the world.

Thanks to holiday letting services like Stayz and AirBnB, people are beginning to get out and experience the area more and more. But such a large area with so few facilities, and fewer roads, makes it hard to know where to go.
